As we welcome 2025, we hope the past year has brought growth, collaboration, and progress for you and your organization. For the Justice Tech Association (JTA), 2024 has been an incredible journey of innovation and impact. Together, we’ve strengthened our community, expanded opportunities for justice tech startups, and advanced the mission of creating equitable access to justice through technology.

Justice tech plays a vital role in addressing systemic barriers, ensuring fairness, and empowering individuals, organizations, and communities. In a world where over 5 Billion people lack the access to the legal services they need, the need for scalable, tech-driven solutions is more pressing than ever. Through collective action, we’ve built momentum to close the justice gap and create a more equitable legal system.

Below, we’ve outlined some of the key achievements from 2024, all made possible with your support. Each initiative reflects our commitment to advancing the field of justice tech and uplifting our members in meaningful ways.

A Year of Impact: JTA’s 2024 Highlights

  • New Website & Member Directory: We’ve rebuilt the JTA website and launched our new Member Directory, showcasing our members’ offerings and introducing a members-only portal with streamlined access to exclusive benefits and resources. A huge step for our growing ecosystem!
  • Justice Tech Accelerator: Partnering with Dream.org, Village Capital, Gener8tor, and LexLab to offer a 10-week hybrid program, personalized mentoring, and a $10K Demo Day prize for 8 high-growth justice tech startups.
  • 10 Member Forums: Covering topics like investor strategies for startups, customer acquisition in justice tech, and supporting women in the justice tech space.
  • Member Outreach Survey: on-on-one interviews culminated in a 3-part report unpacking our members’ current challenges and identifying how we can best support startup growth. (3-part results overview)
  • Curated Justice Tech Directory: Developed a curated justice tech market directory prototype in collaboration with LSNTAP to expand our members’ customer acquisition channels to legal aid, courts, and consumers.

  • White Paper Collaboration: Co-authored a groundbreaking report with RAILS and the LANC Innovation Lab to explore new pathways for B2C justice tech.

Stories Behind the Numbers

Each of these achievements represents not just a milestone for JTA, but also a story of impact. For example, through the Justice Tech Accelerator, startups like Advocord, descbrybe.ai, Open Pro Bono, Redo.io, Thurgood, and We Decide gained access to mentorship and funding that helped them scale their solutions to reach underserved communities. Similarly, our nationwide Legal Aid Listening Sessions opened new doors for partnerships, with several legal aid organizations now exploring collaborations with justice tech innovators.

This progress underscores the power of collective action and the importance of creating spaces where diverse stakeholders—founders, investors, advocates, and policymakers—can come together to drive change. JTA is at the forefront of building this ecosystem.

Looking Ahead to 2025

The year ahead promises to be even more impactful for the justice tech community. As the demand for scalable, innovative solutions continues to grow, JTA remains committed to providing the resources, connections, and advocacy our members need to succeed.

Here’s some of what’s on the horizon for 2025:

  • An expanded Justice Tech Accelerator with more resources, targeted curriculum, and increased prize funding from Dream.org.
  • Our first-ever Member Convening in Tucson, AZ (April 7-8, 2025), marking a very exciting milestone in the growth of JTA!
  • An industry-first justice tech pilot at the LANC Innovation Lab.
  • More exclusive benefits, events, and opportunities to accelerate growth of our members and the broader ecosystem.

We believe that advancing justice tech is a shared mission. In 2025, we invite you to take a more active role in our work:

Closing with Gratitude

As we reflect on the progress made in 2024 and look toward 2025, we’re filled with gratitude for our team, members, partners, and supporters who make this work possible. Justice tech is not just about technology—it’s about people. It’s about the innovators creating solutions, the communities they serve, and the advocates fighting to make justice accessible for everyone. Most importantly, it’s about the individuals that should be able to exercise their rights on a level playing field.

In a pioneering effort to promote justice, truth, and transparency, Thomson Reuters has partnered with the Justice Technology Association (JTA), the first organization uniting tech entrepreneurs for equity in the justice system. This collaboration leverages Thomson Reuters’ content-driven technology expertise to support JTA’s mission of making legal support accessible to all, which the former proudly featured in its Social Impact and ESG Report 2023

The report highlights the partnership’s significant outcomes through two key pro bono initiatives. First, a team of consultants helped JTA refine its messaging, define its value proposition, and develop strategic key messaging documents and pitch decks. Next, digital solutions experts from FindLaw rebuilt the JTA website, improving our web presence, reach, and search engine optimization (SEO). A case study also shows how Thomson Reuters is lending its hand to close the justice gap, leveraging the alliance for a more just society. Together, we’re working towards a future where justice is truly accessible to all.

In North Carolina, a groundbreaking lawsuit is challenging the barriers that prevent paralegals from offering basic legal advice, spotlighting a crucial access to justice issue.

Filed by seasoned paralegals Morag Black Polaski and Shawana Almendarez, alongside the North Carolina Justice For All Project, this legal action confronts state restrictions that infringe on First Amendment rights and hinder the provision of necessary legal support to those caught in the ‘missing middle’—individuals too affluent for legal aid yet unable to afford traditional legal services. This pivotal case underscores a broader debate on legal service delivery and the vital role of paralegals in bridging the justice gap.

The efforts highlighted in the lawsuit mirror the Justice Tech Association‘s broader mission of fostering innovation to make justice more accessible.

Read on for a comprehensive look at the implications of this lawsuit and its potential to reshape legal advice accessibility.
